Why Make This Recipe

If you love the classic pairing of chocolate and orange, these cookies are a must-try. The bright citrus zest adds a refreshing twist to the rich chocolate cookies, making them a unique and delicious treat for yourself or to share with friends and family.

How to Make Chocolate Orange Cookies

Ingredients:

  • 115 grams (1/2 cup or 1 stick) unsalted butter, COLD (straight from the fridge), roughly chopped
  • 190 grams (1 cup) brown sugar
  • 1 large egg, cold
  • 210 grams (1 and 1/2 cups) plain flour or all-purpose flour
  • 40 grams (1/2 cup) cocoa powder, sifted
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Zest of one large orange, freshly zested
  • 150 grams (1 cup) Terry’s Chocolate Orange pieces, roughly chopped
  • 75 grams (1/2 cup) dark chocolate or semi-sweet chocolate, roughly chopped

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 180 C (350 F) standard / 160 C (320 F) fan-forced. Line two baking trays or cookie sheets with baking or parchment paper.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, add cold butter and sugar. Beat with an electric mixer on medium speed until combined and creamy. Add egg. Beat again until combined – but try not to overmix.
  3. Add flour, cocoa, baking soda, salt, and orange zest and beat on low speed until soft cookie dough forms.
  4. Add the Terry’s chocolate orange and dark chocolate chunks and beat briefly on low speed just until mix-ins are incorporated into the dough.
  5. Scoop out cookie dough, roughly 2 tablespoons per cookie, and roll into balls using your hands. Place cookie dough balls on prepared trays, leaving room for the cookies to spread as they bake.
  6. Bake cookies for 12-14 minutes. Leave cookies to cool for 10 minutes before carefully transferring to a wire rack to cool completely. They will appear very soft when fresh from the oven but will firm up as they cool.

How to Serve Chocolate Orange Cookies

Enjoy these delicious cookies with a glass of cold milk, a cup of hot tea, or a scoop of vanilla ice cream for an extra special treat.

How to Store Chocolate Orange Cookies

Store the cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days. For longer storage, freeze the cookies in a freezer-safe container for up to 2 months. Thaw at room temperature before serving.

Tips to Make Chocolate Orange Cookies

  • Use cold butter for a better cookie texture.
  • Do not overmix the dough to keep the cookies soft and chewy.
  • Freshly zested orange zest will provide the best flavor.

Variation

For a twist on the recipe, substitute the dark chocolate with white chocolate chips for a sweeter flavor profile.
