Preparation
Add the slightly softened butter to a large mixing bowl. Pour in the vanilla extract.
Beat with a mixer on medium speed for about two minutes until combined and creamy.
Measure out the powdered sugar and add it all to the bowl. Start mixing on low speed, covering with a clean dish towel if desired.
Mix until mostly combined, then scrape down the sides of the bowl with a spatula.
Increase mixer speed to medium-high and beat for another forty-five seconds until the frosting is fluffy.
If the frosting is too thick or crumbly, add milk a teaspoon at a time, mixing after each addition until smooth.
Taste the frosting and add more vanilla or milk if needed.
If coloring the frosting, mix the color in now.
Serving
Frost cakes, cupcakes, or cookies as desired.
Notes
Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week, or freeze for up to four months. Thaw in the fridge overnight and re-beat for a creamy texture.
