Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 cup butter, slightly softened (salted or unsalted) Use slightly softened butter for best results.
  • 2-3 teaspoons vanilla extract Use high-quality vanilla extract for best flavor.
  • 1 pound powdered sugar (about 4 cups) Add sugar gradually to avoid mess.
  • 1-2 tablespoons milk Add as needed to adjust consistency.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Add the slightly softened butter to a large mixing bowl. Pour in the vanilla extract.
  • Beat with a mixer on medium speed for about two minutes until combined and creamy.
  • Measure out the powdered sugar and add it all to the bowl. Start mixing on low speed, covering with a clean dish towel if desired.
  • Mix until mostly combined, then scrape down the sides of the bowl with a spatula.
  • Increase mixer speed to medium-high and beat for another forty-five seconds until the frosting is fluffy.
  • If the frosting is too thick or crumbly, add milk a teaspoon at a time, mixing after each addition until smooth.
  • Taste the frosting and add more vanilla or milk if needed.
  • If coloring the frosting, mix the color in now.

Serving

  • Frost cakes, cupcakes, or cookies as desired.

Notes

Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week, or freeze for up to four months. Thaw in the fridge overnight and re-beat for a creamy texture.
