For the Brisket

  • 3-4 lb beef brisket Select a good-quality brisket for the best flavor.
  • 2 tbsp olive oil Used for searing the brisket.
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp chili powder Optional for heat.
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 cup barbecue sauce Use your favorite brand.
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp beef drippings From slow cooker or roasting pan.
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

Instructions

Preparation

  • Begin by trimming any excess fat from the brisket. Rinse and pat dry, then season generously with salt, black pepper, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, and optional chili powder.

Searing the Brisket

  • In a skillet, heat olive oil over medium-high heat. Sear the brisket on all sides until nicely browned (about 4-5 minutes per side).

Slow Cooking

  • Slow Cooker Method: Place the brisket in the slow cooker, add beef broth, barbecue sauce, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, brown sugar, sliced onion, and minced garlic. Cover and cook on low for 8-10 hours or until fork-tender.
  • Oven Method: Preheat your oven to 300°F (150°C). In a roasting pan, mix in the same ingredients as above, then cover tightly with foil. Cook for 3-4 hours, basting occasionally, until tender.

Shredding the Brisket

  • Once cooked, remove the brisket from the cooking vessel and place it on a cutting board or a large platter. Allow it to cool slightly, then shred the meat using two forks.

Caramelizing the Pulled Brisket

  • In a skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add shredded brisket along with brown sugar and beef drippings. Stir continually for about 5-7 minutes, allowing the sugar to caramelize and coat the brisket.

Notes

Allow the brisket to rest for at least 30 minutes after cooking before shredding for improved juiciness. Experiment with different barbecue sauces or spices for a unique taste each time.
