Ingredients

Base Ingredients

  • 2 slices slices bread Use day-old bread for extra texture.
  • 1 large egg large egg
  • ½ cup grated cheese (cheddar, pepper jack, or gruyere) Feel free to experiment with different cheeses.
  • 1 teaspoon finely chopped fresh herbs (thyme or rosemary) Optional; adds flavor.
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • Pinch of cayenne pepper (optional) Optional for added spice.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Lightly toast the bread or broil it for 1 to 2 minutes on each side.
  • Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). If using a toaster oven, adjust the cooking rack to the bottom and select the 'BAKE' setting.
  • Crack the egg into a small bowl and beat with a fork until the yolk and white are fully combined.
  • Mix in the grated cheese and fresh herbs (if using). Add salt and pepper to taste.
  • Spread the egg and cheese mixture over the bread, covering it all the way to the crusts. Sprinkle with cayenne if desired.

Baking

  • Bake for about 10 to 12 minutes until the egg and cheese mixture is puffed, bubbly, and starting to brown.

Air Frying (optional)

  • Preheat the air fryer to 340°F (170°C).
  • Prepare the egg mixture and spread it over the untoasted bread slices.
  • Carefully place the slices in the heated air fryer basket.
  • Air fry at 340°F for 8 to 10 minutes, or until browned, toasted, and cooked through.

Notes

Cheesy Egg Toast is best enjoyed hot from the oven or air fryer. Pair it with fresh fruit or a simple salad. Experiment with toppings like hot sauce or extra herbs. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
