Ingredients

Frosting Base

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, room temperature Can use salted butter. Omit additional salt if using salted butter.
  • 3-4 cups powdered sugar Adjust to taste for sweetness.
  • 1 tablespoon instant coffee or espresso powder For a richer flavor, increase the amount.
  • 1 tablespoon boiling water To dissolve instant coffee.
  • tsp salt Omit if using salted butter.
  • 2 tablespoons milk or heavy whipping cream Add more if desired to reach the desired consistency.

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a small bowl, mix boiling water and instant coffee until combined.
  • In a standing mixer or large bowl, cream the butter for 3-5 minutes until very light and creamy, pale yellow in color.
  • Turn off the mixer and add powdered sugar. Beat on low until it starts to combine, about 30-60 seconds.
  • Once it starts to combine and becomes crumbly, turn up the speed to medium/medium high and mix for another 3-4 minutes until light and fluffy.
  • Add the coffee mixture and salt, and mix until combined.
  • Mix in milk or heavy whipping cream, one tablespoon at a time, until the desired consistency is reached.
  • Use with your desired dessert and enjoy!

Notes

For a richer coffee flavor, consider increasing the amount of coffee. To reduce sweetness, less powdered sugar can be used, adding more milk or cream instead. Ensure butter is at room temperature before starting.
