Ingredients

For the apple filling

  • 6 whole apples, peeled, cored, and sliced A mix of Granny Smith and Honeycrisp apples is recommended for depth of flavor.
  • 2 tablespoons white sugar
  • 1.5 teaspoons ground cinnamon Divided usage: 1/2 teaspoon for apples, 1 teaspoon for topping.

For the oat topping

  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 0.75 cup old-fashioned oats
  • 0.75 cup all-purpose flour Can substitute with gluten-free flour blend.
  • 0.5 cup cold butter Ensure butter is very cold for best texture.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Gather all the ingredients.
  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  • In a medium bowl, toss the sliced apples with the white sugar and ½ teaspoon of cinnamon. Transfer the mixture into a 9-inch square baking dish.

Topping

  • In a separate bowl, mix together the brown sugar, oats, flour, and remaining 1 teaspoon of cinnamon.
  • Cut the cold butter into this mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.

Baking

  • Spread the oat mixture over the apples, patting it down gently until even.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for about 40 minutes, or until golden brown and the edges are bubbling.

Notes

Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for a delightful treat. Can store in the refrigerator for 3-4 days.
