Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef Can substitute with ground turkey or chicken for a healthier version.
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard Adjust to taste.
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce Adjust to taste.
  • to taste Salt and pepper
  • 4 hamburger buns Toast before serving if desired.
  • Lettuce, shredded For garnish.
  • Cheddar cheese, shredded For topping.
  • Pickles, sliced For topping.
  • Special sauce (mayonnaise, ketchup, relish blend) Can use premade sauce if short on time.

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef and onion until the beef is browned. Drain excess fat.
  • Stir in the ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Cook for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • While the beef mixture is cooking, toast the hamburger buns if desired.

Assembly

  • Serve the beef mixture on the buns, topped with shredded lettuce, cheddar cheese, pickles, and special sauce.

Notes

Leftover Sloppy Joe mixture can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days. Reheat in a skillet. For a vegetarian version, substitute the ground beef with lentils or mushrooms.
