Ingredients

Frosting Base

  • 1 cup milk Whole or low-fat milk can be used.
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup unsalted butter Beaten until light and fluffy.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Can substitute with other extracts like almond or lemon.

Preparation

  • In a saucepan, whisk together the milk and flour. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens and bubbles.
  • Remove from heat and allow to cool.
  • In a mixing bowl, beat the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy.
  • Gradually add the cooled milk mixture, beating until smooth.
  • Stir in the vanilla extract.
  • Use to frost cakes or cupcakes.

Notes

If using leftovers, store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week; allow to come to room temperature and re-whip before using. For chocolate frosting, add 1/4 cup of unsweetened cocoa powder while beating the butter and sugar.
