Main Ingredients

  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced Caramelize for enhanced flavor.
  • 2 tablespoons butter For caramelizing the onions.
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce Adds depth of flavor.
  • 1 packet French onion soup mix
  • 1 cup beef broth Helps create the sauce.
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil Combines with butter for caramelizing onions.
  • 4 soft hamburger buns Toast lightly for added texture.
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese (or Swiss cheese) For topping the sloppy joes.
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

Cooking the Beef

  • Brown the ground beef in a large skillet over medium heat, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks. Drain excess fat.

Caramelizing the Onions

  • In the same skillet, melt butter and olive oil over medium-low heat. Add onions and cook for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they are golden and caramelized.

Adding Flavor

  • Stir in the Worcestershire sauce and French onion soup mix, mixing well to coat the onions with the seasoning.

Making the Sauce

  • Pour in the beef broth and simmer for 5 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.

Combining Ingredients

  • Return the browned beef to the skillet, stirring to combine with the onions. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Assembling the Sloppy Joes

  • Spoon the beef and onion mixture onto the bottom half of each hamburger bun. Top generously with cheese.

Melting the Cheese

  • Place the assembled buns under a broiler for 1-2 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

Serving

  • Add the top bun and serve immediately while hot.

Notes

Serve with a side of crispy fries or a fresh salad. Leftover mixture can be stored for 3 days. Assemble sandwiches fresh for best texture. For extra flavor, consider adding garlic or thyme while caramelizing onions, and for a spicier version, add hot sauce or jalapeños.
