Homemade Crumpets

Soft, spongy rounds that are a comforting treat for morning tea or an afternoon snack. Easy to prepare with just a few pantry staples.

Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 cups 2 cups (300g) plain flour
  • 1 tsp 1 tsp instant yeast Ensure yeast is fresh for best results
  • 1 tsp 1 tsp sugar
  • 1/2 tsp 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp 1/2 tsp baking powder

Wet Ingredients

  • 1.25 cups 1 1/4 cups (310ml) warm milk Should be warm, not hot
  • 1/2 cup 1/2 cup (125ml) warm water Should be warm, not hot

For Cooking

  • Butter or oil for greasing

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a large bowl, mix together the flour, yeast, sugar, warm milk, and water until smooth.
  • Cover the bowl with a clean towel and let the mixture rest for about an hour until bubbles form and it doubles in size.
  • Stir in the salt and baking powder just before cooking.

Cooking

  • Grease crumpet rings and a skillet or pan with a little butter or oil, then heat over medium-low heat.
  • Pour batter into each ring until half full and cook for 6–8 minutes until the tops look set with lots of bubbles.
  • Carefully remove the rings, flip the crumpets, and cook for 1–2 minutes on the other side until golden.
  • Serve warm with butter, jam, or honey.

Notes

Crumpets are best enjoyed warm and fresh from the skillet. If stored, keep them in an airtight container at room temperature for up to two days, or wrap and refrigerate for longer storage. Reheat in a toaster or skillet.
