  • 1/2 cup boiling water Add less for denser bread
  • 2 cups flour All-purpose flour recommended

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • In a mixing bowl, combine the molasses, baking soda, ginger, and butter or lard.
  • Stir these ingredients together until well blended, then pour in half a cup of boiling water followed by the flour, mixing until the batter is smooth and well-combined.
  • Pour the batter into a well-greased 8x8 inch baking pan.

Baking

  • Bake in the preheated oven for about 18 minutes, or until set in the center.

Notes

Serve in squares dusted with powdered sugar or with whipped cream. For variations, try adding nuts, raisins, or different spices.
