Ingredients

Frosting Base

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened Ensure butter is at room temperature.
  • 16 oz powdered sugar About 3.5-4 cups.
  • 1-2 tbsp milk or heavy whipping cream, optional Add gradually if needed for consistency.
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract For flavor.
  • Pinch salt, optional Omit if using salted butter.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Using a hand-held mixer or stand mixer, cream the softened butter on medium-high speed until pale yellow, approximately 4-5 minutes.
  • Turn off the mixer and add the powdered sugar and vanilla extract. Mix on low speed for about a minute until crumbly.
  • Increase the speed to medium and continue mixing for 3-4 minutes until the frosting is light and fluffy.
  • If too thick, mix in milk or cream a little at a time until desired consistency is reached.

Serving

  • Spread or pipe the frosting onto cupcakes, cakes, or cookies as desired.
  • Use food coloring for special occasions to personalize your frosting.

Storage

  • Store leftover frosting in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week.
  • Re-whip with a mixer before using to restore fluffiness.
  • For longer storage, freeze in a freezer-safe container for up to three months.
