Preparation

  • In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter with an electric mixer on medium speed until it's smooth and creamy—about 2-3 minutes.
  • Gradually add in the sifted powdered sugar, mixing on low speed until mostly combined.
  • Pour in the heavy cream, vanilla extract, and salt, and beat the mixture on medium-high speed for 2-3 minutes until light and fluffy.
  • If the frosting is too thick, add a little more cream; if it's too thin, add more powdered sugar to achieve your desired consistency.

Notes

For a richer flavor, consider using vanilla bean paste instead of vanilla extract. Experiment with different flavors, such as cocoa powder for chocolate buttercream or lemon zest for a citrus twist. Store leftover frosting in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week.
